When people picture the UK’s biggest events, they picture the headline acts, packed festival fields, sporting moments and unforgettable experiences.
Behind every one of them is a huge operational machine making sure hundreds of thousands of people can arrive, move around and leave safely and smoothly. That’s Zone Ex management, and it’s what EP Team does.
This summer, EP Team has been doing exactly that across the length and breadth of the UK. From Stirling to the Isle of Wight, Ireland to Leeds, Sunderland and everywhere in between, our teams have been delivering the traffic management, parking, stewarding, infrastructure and wider Zone Ex operations that sit around some of the country’s biggest events.
One Team, One Nationwide Zone Ex Operation
Summer is always a busy time in events, and our teams are rarely in one place for long.
Across the season, we’ve supported major festivals, sporting events and large-scale public gatherings, often with several operations running simultaneously in different parts of the country.
Behind each one is a different plan. Different transport networks, different audiences, different sites and different pressures. What connects them is the need to understand how people will arrive, how vehicles and pedestrians will move around the wider site and what needs to happen when everyone decides to leave at once.
The locations and events change. The objective doesn’t: get people where they need to be, safely, efficiently, and with as little disruption as possible.
What Is Zone Ex Management?
Zone Ex is the operational zone surrounding an event: everything that happens before someone reaches the gate and after they leave it. It covers traffic flow, car parking, shuttle buses, campervan fields, drop-off points and pedestrian movement- all of it planned and managed so the event inside the venue can run without disruption from the chaos outside it.
Put simply, it’s everything happening around an event before someone reaches the gate and after they leave it.
Getting people into a venue is only one part of the challenge. We plan for what happens before they arrive, how they move through the site, and how they leave at the end. That means planning for the peaks: thousands of cars arriving at once, campervan fields filling up, shuttle buses running continuously, and the moment a headline act finishes and everyone leaves at the same time.
It’s not simply directing traffic. It’s understanding how an entire site works: where people are travelling from, how they’re arriving, where vehicles need to go, how different transport streams interact, and what happens when thousands of people arrive at once.
From planning and infrastructure through to live operations on the ground, our teams keep traffic flowing, manage access points, respond to changing conditions, and keep the wider operation running safely.
The Numbers Behind the Operation
The scale can be hard to picture until you see the numbers.
At BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sunderland, EP Team supported the movement of more than 100,000 people, coordinated 300+ staff, managed 5,000+ cars, facilitated 35,000 shuttle bus tickets, and coordinated more than 1,000 shuttle bus movements, across a 21-day operation.
And Sunderland was just the start.
Across the Summer season, our teams have delivered event traffic and parking management at Reading & Leeds, Latitude, Wilderness, the Isle of Wight Festival and Electric Picnic, to name just a few, alongside sporting fixtures, community events and major public gatherings across the UK and Ireland.
Every event looks different at close range. A festival might see thousands of cars and campervans arrive over several days. A major fixture might bring tens of thousands of people within a few hours. A city-centre event brings its own challenges around public transport, road networks and pedestrian flow. Whatever the environment, the goal is the same: keep people moving.
Every Site Is Different: From Festival Fields to City Streets
A festival might see cars and campervans arriving steadily over several days. A sporting fixture can bring tens of thousands of people into one area within a much tighter window. Move into a town or city centre, and you’re working around existing road networks, public transport, residents, businesses and people who may have nothing to do with the event at all.
Even two festivals of a similar size can operate very differently once you look at the site, audience and surrounding infrastructure.
That’s why so much of the work happens before anyone arrives. Our teams work alongside organisers, venues, local authorities and other delivery partners to understand the individual site and build the operation around it.
Then event day brings the plan to life.
Traffic patterns change. People arrive earlier or later than expected. Weather intervenes. A route becomes busier than anticipated. It’s where having experienced people on the ground, with a clear understanding of the wider operation, really matters.
The People Behind Every Safe Event
The scale of our summer isn’t just locations, vehicles or statistics. It’s people.
Behind every event are teams working early mornings, late nights and long days to keep operations moving: Operations Managers, supervisors, traffic stewards, car park marshals and specialist teams, each one playing a part in making it work. They’re the people at the gates, managing traffic flow, supporting visitors, monitoring access points and solving problems as they happen.
Much of that work will never be noticed by the people attending, and in many ways that’s the point. When the operation around an event works well, visitors simply get where they need to go.
When you’re moving tens of thousands of people and thousands of vehicles, those people make all the difference.
A Summer on the move
From Stirling and Sunderland to Reading, Leeds, the Isle of Wight, Suffolk, Devon, London, Southport, Blackpool and Northampton, it’s been quite a summer so far.
What we’re most proud of isn’t simply the distance travelled or the numbers involved. It’s the range of teams, clients and partners we’ve worked alongside to make each operation happen.
