Notting Hill Carnival is one of the UK’s largest public events, bringing around 2 million people into the streets of West London across one weekend. Delivering an event of this scale requires more than a significant on-site team, it demands careful planning, robust security infrastructure and clear communication.
For EP Team, this year’s carnival marked a new milestone, as it was our largest combined deployment of Pitagone HVM and SmartSign-LIVE! technology to date.
Working alongside Pitagone UK, we deployed over 350 Pitagone HVM modules, 11 SmartSign-LIVE! units and over 200 members of staff, supporting the wider event operation across one of the UK’s most challenging live city environments.
From protecting pedestrian and vehicle routes to delivering live information across the site, the deployment demonstrated how high-security vehicle mitigation and intelligent event communication can work together to support safer, better-informed events.

Notting Hill Carnival: An Event on a Huge Scale
Now in its 60th year, Notting Hill Carnival remains one of the largest street festivals in the world, attracting around 2 million people across the weekend.
Unlike a traditional venue-based event, carnival takes place across a busy urban environment where residents, businesses, public transport, event traffic and visitors all share the same streets.
For EP Team, delivering the operation meant months of preparation before a single Pitagone module or SmartSign-LIVE! unit arrived on site.
The final deployment included:
- 350 Pitagone HVM modules, forming a secure perimeter across the carnival footprint.
- 11 SmartSign-LIVE! units, providing wayfinding and live updates.
- Over 200 EP Team staff on the ground throughout the weekend.
- More than 50 pre-planned messages, ready to be deployed at short notice.
- Communication reaching over 1 million people, supporting the wider event operation.
The Challenge: Security and Communication in a Live City Environment
Notting Hill Carnival is not a static event. It is a constantly moving operation, with large volumes of people and vehicles navigating the same streets across the weekend.
That created several key challenges for the EP Team deployment.
Coordinating a Large-Scale HVM Deployment
With 350 Pitagone HVM modules and 11 SmartSign-LIVE! units spread across the site, coordination was critical.
More than 200 members of staff were required to install, monitor and manage the deployment, making logistical planning one of the biggest considerations behind the operation.
Every element needed to work together from equipment positioning and installation to on-site monitoring and communication.
Managing a Constantly Moving Environment
Unlike a fixed-perimeter event, Notting Hill Carnival takes place across a live city environment where pedestrian and vehicle movements are constantly changing.
The teams managing the deployment needed to adapt to the conditions on the ground, supporting the wider operation as the flow of people and vehicles evolved throughout the weekend.
Engineering Technology for the Conditions
The SmartSign-LIVE! units also needed to be adapted for the demands of the carnival environment. The 11 units were reinforced to provide the stability required across the exposed, high-footfall streets of the route, while remaining clearly visible above the crowd. This ensured the technology could deliver its intended purpose without compromising the wider event operation.
The Solution: Pitagone HVM and SmartSign-LIVE! Working Together
To meet these challenges, EP Team combined Pitagone HVM barriers with SmartSign-LIVE! technology, creating a deployment that supported both physical security and live event communication.
The 350 Pitagone modules formed a secure perimeter around the carnival footprint, supporting the management of pedestrian and vehicle movements across the site.
By integrating HVM into the wider event operation, EP Team was able to support the security requirements of a major public event while working within a complex urban environment.
Alongside the HVM deployment, 11 SmartSign-LIVE! units provided clear, visible information to visitors across the site.
The reinforced units delivered wayfinding and live updates, helping people navigate the event environment and stay informed as conditions changed.
Pre-Planned Messaging for Real-Time Communication
Behind the scenes, EP Team had a pre prepared library of more than 50 pre-planned messages. This meant the team could respond quickly to changing conditions on the ground, pushing live updates to the public without waiting to create new messaging in the moment.
From wayfinding to operational updates, the messaging system supported a more responsive approach to event communication.
The Result: Our Largest Pitagone Deployment to Date
The deployment supported the wider operation of an event attended by around 2 million people, with live communication reaching over 1 million people across the weekend.
For EP Team, Notting Hill Carnival’s 60th anniversary marked a new benchmark: our largest combined deployment of Pitagone HVM and SmartSign-LIVE! technology to date.
More importantly, it demonstrated the value of bringing together high-security vehicle mitigation, live event technology and experienced operational teams to support the delivery of complex public events.

Supporting Safer, Better-Informed Events
Notting Hill Carnival highlighted the importance of taking a joined-up approach to event security and communication.
By combining Pitagone HVM with SmartSign-LIVE!, EP Team was able to support both the physical protection of the event environment and the flow of information to the public.
It is this combination of technology, infrastructure and operational expertise that enables us to deliver solutions designed around the realities of each event.
Whether supporting a major street festival, a city-centre celebration or a large-scale public gathering, our team works with organisers and stakeholders to develop the right approach to event security, HVM and live communication.
