Investing in People: Why Training Matters More Than Ever

Across the events, stadia and traffic management sectors, there is a growing recognition that successful operations are built on more than plans, technology and infrastructure.

They are built on people.

Whether it’s managing ingress at a major stadium, operating a traffic management plan around a city centre event, or supporting audience movement across a greenfield festival site, the quality of the people on the ground has a direct impact on safety, efficiency and customer experience.

As the sector continues to evolve, the demands placed on those teams have never been greater.

Large events and venues often rely on a combination of permanent employees, casual workers, seasonal staff and specialist contractors. It’s a model that gives operators the flexibility they need, but it also creates an important challenge. How do you ensure that every individual arrives on site with the skills, confidence and understanding needed to perform effectively in a live environment?

For us it comes down to the time and investment that is spent on onboarding and training. Not simply as a route to compliance or qualifications, but as a way of creating consistency, building confidence and raising standards across entire workforces.

As an organisation working across major events, festivals, stadia and public spaces throughout the UK, we’ve seen first-hand how the industry’s training requirements have evolved. Expectations around safety continue to increase. Operational environments are becoming more complex. Clients rightly expect highly professional teams who can adapt, communicate effectively and make good decisions when situations change.

In response to this growing need, EP Team opened our dedicated Training Hub earlier this year.

The investment reflects our belief that developing people is one of the most important things any organisation in our sector can do. It provides a dedicated environment for learning, practical development and professional growth, supporting both our own teams and the wider industry.

One of the advantages of being an operational business first and a training provider second is that our training is shaped by real-world experience.

The challenges faced by a steward managing crowd movements at a sell-out fixture are often different from those faced by a traffic operative working around a greenfield festival site. The principles remain the same, but the application requires experience, judgement and confidence.

That’s why our approach combines accredited qualifications with practical learning and ongoing development. We deliver training across spectator safety, security, traffic management, first aid, health and safety, CCTV operations and leadership development. Alongside industry-recognised qualifications, we have also developed in-house programmes designed around the specific operational standards and behaviours we expect from our teams.

The aim is not simply to prepare someone for their next shift. It’s to help them build a career.

One of the biggest opportunities we’ve recognised for our sector is in creating clearer pathways for people to develop, specialise and progress. We want people joining EP Team to see more than a temporary role. We want them to see opportunities to gain qualifications, develop new skills, move into specialist disciplines and ultimately progress into leadership and management positions.

We’ve already seen team members move from frontline operational roles into permanent positions within event management, staffing and operations, bringing valuable practical experience with them.

When organisations appoint EP Team, they know they are working with people who have been trained to consistent standards, supported through ongoing development and prepared for the realities of live operational environments. It means stronger decision making, better communication, improved customer experience and a workforce capable of adapting when conditions inevitably change.

For us, training has become much more than an internal function. It is part of how we support the wider industry, create opportunities for the next generation of event professionals and continue raising standards across the sectors we work in.

Because while every event, venue and project is different, one thing remains consistent.

Great operations start with great people.
