Description
The NHSS 12AB High-Speed Roads (Motorways and Dual Carriageways) General Operative qualification equips learners with the knowledge and practical understanding required to safely install, maintain, inspect, and remove temporary traffic management systems on the UK's motorway and high-speed dual carriageway network. The course ensures operatives work in accordance with Chapter 8 requirements, current legislation, and National Highways Sector Scheme standards.
This nationally recognised qualification is essential for anyone involved in high-speed traffic management operations and forms a key step towards becoming a competent and fully qualified Traffic Management Operative (TMO).
The course covers:
- Health and Safety legislation and responsibilities
- Working safely on motorways and high-speed roads
- Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) principles and procedures
- Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual
- NHSS 12AB standards and requirements
- Traffic management equipment selection, placement, maintenance, and removal
- Installation of lane closures from a given datum
- Risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Quality assurance requirements
- Multiple-choice assessment (typically requiring a 75% pass mark)
The qualification is aimed at anyone whose role involves working on high-speed road networks, including:
- Traffic Management Operatives
- Highways Maintenance Teams
- Temporary Traffic Management Contractors
- Utilities contractors working on motorways and dual carriageways
Duration
- Usually 1 day of classroom training and assessment
- Followed by a period of practical site assessments over approximately 3–6 months to achieve full operative status.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must normally hold either:
- A valid NHSS 12 Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course (TTMBC) qualification
OR
- A current NHSS 12 qualification.
